We’ve put together this brief set of guidelines to help us (and you) narrow the search.
Please bear in mind that in some cases it represents the absolute best-case set of criteria so please don’t let that stop you recommending something you’ve got wind of that doesn’t tick all of the boxes; we know it’s likely we’ll have to compromise somewhere.
We’ve also put together a list of more general questions that you can find on our about page.
Where?
Mid Wales, ideally Powys. But we will consider further afield.
How much land?
10 – 40 acres.
What is your budget?
We feel we’ve a good idea what the market rate is per acre and based on this we’re confident that we can afford woods in the 15-30 acre mark. Obviously factors like the maturity of the timber, fencing liabilities, access, storage options and water sources would also need to be taken into account.
What mix of trees?
Ideally a mix of broadleaved trees. An Ash & Oak mix with a Hazel understory would be perfect.
Would you consider a younger woodland?
Yes, but ideally there would be mature growth too.
What about water courses?
We’re particularly keen to find a wood with a small stream on it. We’re not so fussed about fishing rights (though this would be great too) but we’d like the option to create naturally fed ponds and, if applicable and suitable, use mirco-hydro to generate small amounts of electricity to charge a few batteries for phone charging and the like.
